Part 1 of How to start writing

Posted by Quinne Darkover on February 26, 2014 at 9:40 AM Comments comments (0)

I have often seen people saying 'I want to write" followed by a few questions. I decided I would start a series about writing BUT about how I write and a few extra thoughts.

Part 1

How to get started. You must already have something in mind to write about or you wouldn't be asking about how to, so I will skip to the mechanics. You can use a computer with a word processor ( best option ) write on paper, write on the back of envelopes. No matter what you want to...

Sequel

I had not planned on starting so soon. I had planned on doing a full outline etc, for the sequel, but just like the first book, images in my head drove me to the keys and I have started putting to paper, the sequel. Working Title, The Captain and the Lady Fair. Pathfinder.

Editing done.

I should have posted this a few weeks ago. Editing is done! Editor did a great job. I still read sections at a writers group every 2 weeks to see if there are ways to improve the book. So far the feedback from the group is very positive.

Edit and proofing

I put out a proposal for bids on edit and proof of my novel. In 2 days I got 69 bids. I stopped it at that point and started working on a short list. Lots of great people out there and it is a tough call. Some were easy to weed out when on the bid they spelled worse that I do. Some were specialists with editing tech brochures and never edited anything else. Oh well, everyone is hungry these days and they try.

Editing

Editing is almost done. My Alpha reader bailed on me after 1/2 the book. Trying to catch my own mistakes is tough but I am plugging away. I hope to have it on available by Sept.

Done!

On Sat May 20 at 6:30 am, The final words were written. Now I get to print the whole thing out and start doing edits. I do want to add, increase or change some descriptions. I also need to fix a ton of passive voice sentences. Yep, I have to fix spots that are tell and not show. Then I need to find a good Beta Reader, Then hire a proofer. I also need to get some cover art.

Not publish ready yet, but it is a great deal closer.

Small milestone

A milestone of sorts.. Chapter 100 done. 84.5 k words and I can see the end coming. I don't want it to end, so I started making notes for a sequel as ideas pop in my head.

Getting Started

Posted by Quinne Darkover on May 6, 2013 at 11:15 PM Comments comments (0)

I started this web site to be allow people to see the first few chapters of my novel. It should be completed by the end of May ( except going back through from page 1 to do edits. )

I don't know if anyone would find it interesting if I blog about how I write but I may do that. On writting I will say there is no right way or wrong way. ( Okay be picky, the wrong way is to not write at all )
